He’s currently the longest-serving member in the U.S. Senate.
Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, currently the longest-serving member in the Senate, announced on Monday he won’t run for reelection in 2022.
Leahy is chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, a former chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee and is retiring after being elected to the Senate in 1974.
The 81-year-old Leahy, who has held his seat for eight terms, said he and his wife Marcelle decided, “It is time to pass the torch to the next Vermonter who will carry on this work for our great state. It’s time to come home.”
Leahy’s term is slated to expire in January 2023.
